| Ten Reasons Why Freemasonry is Incompatible with the Claims of Christ
Many people believe that the teachings of the Lodge and those of Christianity can be fused. They believe that the Lodge offers enough freedom to its initiates that faith in Christ is not compromised. After all, the Blue Lodge suggests in the Entered Apprentice degree that nothing in the obligation will conflict "with the duties you owe to God, your country, your neighbor, your family, or yourself." (Entered Apprentice Degree, State Of Nevada, circa 1986, p.9) Since each brother is encouraged to develop faith according to his own conscience, it would seem to be simple to maintain allegiance to both systems.
This concept would work if the Lodge encouraged ethical achievement devoid of the development of ongoing theological concepts in the initiate. The problem is that the Lodge does teach theological material from its inception. The question for the Christian is whether the theological material presented is consistent with biblical revelation. If it is found not to be so, it places him in an awkward position.
Either he adheres to the teachings of Freemasonry, or he adheres to the claims of Christ. One will be upheld in his thinking, and the other subjugated. This creates people who belong to an organization yet do not believe its tenets. As Jesus once said, He would rather people be hot or cold, but the lukewarm condition of the middle is awful. Jesus says in Revelation 3:16: I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were ether one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm-neither hot nor cold- I am about to spit you out of my mouthh."
The following Ten Reasons are from a sermon preached in 1997 at the request of the leadership team of my home church. Possibly they will help some to enhance the study and dialogue of the topic.
Introduction Freemasonry is back on the front burner. The success of works such as The DaVinci Code and National Treasure only affirms that people are hungry for answers. Secular historians have quietly been joining the discussion, publishing works such as The Secret Architecture of the Nation’s Capital. Churches are dusting off old discussions and asking questions about the content of Masonry’s teachings. My purpose in developing this website is not to bash Masonry, but rather to examine the compatibility, or lack of it, between the Lodge and Christianity. I affirm that Masons do many wonderful acts of charity, and are generally upstanding members of the community. The freedom our nation affords the nurture of all organizations. At issue, however, is whether a Christian can fully believe the teachings of the Lodge and the teachings of Jesus at the same time. It is my belief that an examination of the teachings of the Lodge and the Bible place the two on a collision course from the beginning.
